Corporate Person

Imagine a world without corporation, without structure, and without the complexity of the working world today. Some may even think of these corporations and businesses as individuals with the same rights that you and I have as human beings. Those with this frame of mind would not be too far from the truth. Our economic structure and business establishment has grown in such a way over past centuries that we depend on these conglomerates as a foundation of economic stability. In turn, they seek from us the same rights as businesses that we as individuals are granted as citizens of this great country. In the following pages, we will explore this concept further in understanding what Corporate Personhood is and discovering the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Committee, including the parties involved, reasons for the case, arguments for and against the case, how this historic event relates to current events, and finally how the decision on this case affect our future in the corporate world. In order to better understand how corporate personhood works, it is important to understand where this idea comes from and how it ties into the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Committee. Corporate personhood finds its initial roots from a debate that Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson had over how centralized the government of the United States should be, how much power the member states should have over their own business, and how much citizens and citizens’ organizations should have in public affairs. According to Wikipedia, “While both Hamilton and Jefferson participated in the creation of the more centralized Federal Government than that in the Articles of Confederation, they had very different visions of government. Hamilton
advocated for a stronger central government, which he believed necessary for an industrialized nation, while Jefferson advocated for a more decentralized, more agrarian nation (Wikipedia, 2).” As US businesses and corporations…

If You Lived in Southeast Asia Liam Lamb

S.E Asia Proj. Part 1: I would end up living in one of three cities which are: Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Macau; all of which are located in either the eastern or southeastern region of China and I would choose Shanghai. I would choose Shanghai because the city is a global financial center, it is a transport hub with the world’s busiest container port, and Shanghai sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River. Important physical landmarks in this area include the Yangtze River and the Yangtze River Delta. Shanghai has a humid subtropical climate and experiences four distinct seasons, the winters are damp and cold with cold Siberian winds blowing in from the northwest; summers are hot and humid with an average of 8.7 days exceeding 95 degrees Fahrenheit. I would choose Shanghai over the other two most populated cities because of its economy mainly.
Part 2: The major industries of China are: machinery, automobiles, energy, and steel. The top 5 major exports of China are electronic technology/ equipment, machinery, knit or crochet clothing, furniture/ lighting/ signs, and medical/ technical equipment. Based off the major exports of the country I would work in the electronic technology industry. This job is available because without laws restricting children from working they have enough people on the assembly lines.
Part 3: Three unique holidays are Chinese New Year which is the end of one year and the beginning of a new year which originated from folklore, Army Day is celebrated to commemorate the Nanchang Uprising, and Dragon boat festival which is to honor patriotic poet: Chu Yuan who drowned on the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. These holidays are celebrated by setting up decorations, setting off fireworks, etc. Each of these holidays have a historical background.
Part 4: The official language of China is Mandarin. Mandarin is mainly spoken in China. Mandarin is spoken…

The King’s Speech Review

The King’s Speech (2010)
Cast: Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Guy Pearce, Timothy Spall, Derek Jacobi, Jennifer Ehle, Michael Gambon
Director: Tom Hooper
In this historical drama, Colin Firth plays the role of King George VI who has had a stuttering problem since his childhood and reluctantly accedes to the throne after his father’s death and later, abdication of his brother. To help cope with his stammer, his wife (played by Helena Bonham Carter) persuades him to see an Australian therapist, Lionel Logue (played by Geoffrey Rush) and in time both men form a strong bond of friendship. Lionel later helps the king to make his first wartime speech.
A truly amazing part of this film is the setting. The lighting, design, location, all manages to show the King’s feelings of constriction and tightness. Low lighting is used to show a contemporary feel and very often the camera focuses on the actors’ faces to show their expressions. Even the music has been selected in such a way that it helps bring out the sadness felt by the king.
The genre of this movie is drama but I loved the fact that it has numerous instances of humour. I had never thought that a king would have to do physical exercises which were not considered appropriate for a person of his position. Even if it was difficult for the king, you still manage to smile or laugh when he tries to say tongue twisters or sway his hands about in circles. I also liked the fact that even though the movie is serious, there are the themes of friendship, family, and courage that make the film suitable for teenagers to watch also.
Colin Firth’s acting in this film is truly exceptional. I think he has really been able to get into his character and made the stammering so real. Geoffrey Rush has also acted beautifully and I’m in love with his character. He has managed to show Lionel as a friend more than a therapist and I think that is what gave confidence to the King to brave his fears. I think the…

A Fireside Chat
Number #5
An atmosphere of gloom bombarded me as I strutted abreast into the dreadful building. The abundant air overcastted me alleviating my distresses, knowing that finally my problems would be solved. Unfortunately this was not the case as that day the lines were wrapped around the building clearly displaying the shortage of staff. As I approached the customer service center, an obviously annoyed lady stood behind the glass shrieking “Next!!!!!” Giving a verbal account of my situation, I was then rudely interrupted; she stated “Sweetie that’s way above my pay-grade, and besides I am about to go to lunch, so sounds like you need to find someone to help you with your problem.” Due to the below-standard, negative work affiliation of the average Bahamian, it has been concluded that the majority of persons tend to have a poor work ethic. In the text, “A Fireside Chat” written by Sir Lynden Pindling, he urges Bahamians to take pride in their work and to do it to the best of their ability. Many Bahamians display poor work skills because of their complacent mindset, their inadequate workmanship and their dependency upon the government and others around them.
Why is it that expatriates or guest workers emigrate from all over the world come to The Bahamas to work on our major sites and even in our schools? Why does the government feel like the work cannot be executed by the Bahamian people? Apparently, it is because they have poor work ethnic that is a resultant of their complacent mindset. The complaints we often hear include, “Bahamians refuse to stay on jobs for substantial lengths of time; Bahamians are not consistent or dedicated workers; Bahamians work ethnics are poor, showing up to work late and leaving early” said Brent Symonette during his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration. The statuesque of the work force is slowly diminishing as people are constantly being…

Persuasive Essay
Women? In the Military? Pshh! Women should not be given the ability to pursue a career in the infantry position for any branch of the military for a few simple reasons. It has been proven that women cannot handle the same physical and emotional stress that a man can. They would be a distraction to the male soldiers, leaving them incapable of maintaining full focus on battle. Lastly, there are situations during battle that American soldiers get captured and are used as hostages. Whether or not you hear about it, it is frequently occurring and if a woman is captured the “tangos” will pose a better threat to them. Potentially, they would use sexual force on the woman to get what they want.
To begin with, women cannot tolerate the same physical and emotional stress that a man can. It is very noticeable that women are not as physically strong as men. Their muscular development is simply not as good as most men’s, even that of men who are not that physically fit. This is important and it occurs for a reason. The female hormones, which determine all the secondary sex characteristics of men and women, tend to build more fat and less muscle in women ( Women and…). Another characteristic that most women have in common is their extreme sensitivity. In general, women are very emotional. They are easily depressed, disgusted, and scared. During combat, those are not very good characteristics to possess. Yes, men are sensitive as well. However, they are much more able to control this.
Next, the women will pose a great distraction to the men during combat. After be deployed in places like Afghanistan or Iraq with only your male comrades, a woman will very quickly draw your attention away from battle. Each day that goes by that woman will look prettier and prettier until eventually she’ll have your full attention and render you incapable of your full potential.
Lastly, women are at much more danger in…

Desire under the elms

Desire Under the Elms: Drama of the Absent Hero By Majeed M. Mudhin Instructor: College of Education ; University of Anbar Ever since Ancient Drama, the absent character has played an important part in the dramatic construction of the play. Many dramas are set around the quest for such an absent character. If we take, for example, the dead father in Oedipus Rex and the ghost in Hamlet, we see that they are all driving forces of the play’s dramatic action. However, the absent character is not necessarily dead. It is true that he never appears, but his implied presence acts as a dramatic catalyst. He acquires the focus of attention for the other characters and is central to the play’s plot as well. As far as Eugene O’Neill’s Desire Under the Elms is concerned, he takes it further to the extent that the absent cahracter becomes the most influential one in his tragedy. Eben’s mother is dead, yet she is present and haunting in almost every incident in the play. It is worth noting here that O’Neill’s absent character differs from his predecessor in certain facets. Firstly, O’Neill has chosen for his play a female not male character to take the role of the hero which is rare especially in Ancient Drama. Secondly, his absent character has a sense of reality unlike Ancient Drama which is woven by imagination. Thirdly, as a modern dramatist, O’Neill depends heavily on psychology and classical patterns of tragedy in creating his character. In doing so, the character drawn took another dimension which is so deep and comprehensive. No doubt, the twentieth century witnessed drastic developments in the fields of ideas. This goes back to the revolution in depth psychology in the late nineteenth century that has affected both the interpretation and creation of literary works. Scientific explanations became more subtle and difficult for the layman to understand. The orderly world that had been presented to the reader in Elizabethan and even Victorian literature is superceded…

P PResearch Papers and Essays: Formatting and Citing Sources Not only does a good research paper include thorough research and thoughtful analysis, it should also follow specific rules for citing your sources and formatting. This brief guide will illustrate how to correctly reference your sources and set up your paper. Connections Academy students should use Modern Language Association (MLA) style for citing sources and formatting. MLA style is commonly used in many middle and high schools, as well as in colleges and universities across the country. The MLA publishes the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. This is a very useful book, as it goes into great depth explaining the steps for writing a paper. The book is available at most bookstores, and your local library likely has copies. If you run into an issue, such as citing a source that is not covered in this guide, it is best to find the proper way of citing your source by finding it in the MLA Handbook or by asking your teacher. This guide covers the basics for formatting and citing sources. However, you should always follow the specific guidelines presented by your teacher. If you want to incorporate pictures or other images into your paper, ask your teacher about the best way to do this. Depending on your teacher’s preference, images can be included within the body of the paper or in an appendix. Formatting Your Paper Here are some basic steps for setting up your paper. 1.
